American Airlines, the world’s fourth–largest airline by number of passengers, announced orders for 200 Boeing 737s and 260 Airbus A320 aircrafts as reported by various international news sites, July 20, 2011.

It was reported that the new orders for 200 Boeing 737s and 260 Airbus A320 aircrafts, considered as "the largest aircraft order in history" by American Airlines, will place the company as the youngest fleet in the US within five years.

As noted, parent company AMR Corporation chairman Gerard Arpey was quoted saying that American would have "the youngest and most fuel-efficient fleet among our peers in the US industry within five years."

"This new fleet will dramatically improve our fuel and operating costs, while enhancing our financial flexibility,” he adds.

Report reveals that deliveries of the new aircrafts will be between 2013 and 2022.

It was revealed further that the deal with American was a "strong endorsement" for Europe's Airbus.

As told, Tom Enders, Airbus president and chief executive, was quoted saying, "We are extremely proud and gratified once again to count American Airlines among Airbus' global customers."
