The Aquino government has made it a point to use “West Philippine Sea” against “South China Sea” when referring to the waters west of the Philippines as reported by the Philippine Daily Inquirer, June 11, 2011.

It was reported that, Malacañang for the first time used in its statement yesterday “West Philippine Sea” in its reaction over China’s warning on Thursday, as addressed through Ambassador Liu Jianchao, for the country to stop searching for oil in the hotly contested Spratly islands without China’s permission.

As reported, Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda was quoted in a news briefing yesterday saying, “The Republic of the Philippines has stated its position on the various territorial issues in the West Philippine Sea. We are committed to dialog with other claimants.”

“We call on all parties to refrain from inflammatory statements that would make it more difficult to reach a mutually agreeable solution,” he adds.
