Philippines’ Dragon Warriors ups gold haul to four in Tampa Bay

The Dragon Warriors, the unheralded dragon boat racers from the Philippines, have achieved more than any Philippine sports team this year by winning its fourth gold at the 10th World Dragon Boat Racing Championships in Tampa, Florida as reported by local news sites, August 7, 2011.


As reported, the Dragon Warriors won its fourth gold in the competition as it bested Hungary and Trinidad and Tobago in the 500-meter Premier Open Mixed Event in the small boat division.

As noted, the Philippine Dragon Warriors claimed their third gold Saturday in the 200 meter men’s small boat event by registering a time of 57.07 seconds beating the old record in the event which is a minute and .719 seconds, Puerto Rico came in second with a time of 1:03.393 seconds followed in third by Italy with 1:03.941 seconds.

As revealed, the 200-meter event is the shortest race in the competition and is considered to be the version of the sprints in athletics; the Philippines will go for its fifth gold in the finals Sunday.

It was further revealed that the 10th World Dragon Boat Racing Championships in Tampa, Florida attracted around 2,000 athletes representing 17 countries who are all vying for top honors in the sport of dragon boat racing.

It was mentioned that the Philippine Dragon Warriors are composed mainly of enlisted men and women from the Philippine Army and have limited funding unlike other popular sports in the Philippines yet their success gave great honor to the Philippines.
